Summary
South Africa. A nation with an unparalleled history of human rights violations; however, today, it moves forward to overcome its horrific past. This program takes us back to the days South Africa took its largest step forward, the days when Apartheid died. Here we see violent protesters waving banners saying "Hang Mandela"; one year later, peaceful demonstrators dance in the streets celebrating Nelson Mandela's victory. Since the ANC's rise to power in 1994, we discover that abuses declined, but difficult times remained. "Apartheid is dead, but its legacy lives on." The new government abolished racial laws and overhauled the police departments, but even today it continues to deal with those guilty of human rights violations. We see excerpts from "Countdown to Freedom" and "Prisoners of Hope" - a documentation of a reunion of former political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, at Robin Island. The now free men used this journey to reflect on their past and to celebrate their collective strength. Lastly, we see an interview with Nelson Mandela's daughter, Makaziwe
