Summary
Guatemala's Indian Mayan majority lives in terror of its own government. Up to 45,000 Mayans 'disappeared' between 1986 and 1996 - victims of a brutal 'ethnic cleansing' campaign. Grieving widows watch in horror as aid workers dig up mass graves containing hundreds of skeletons. Mayan Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu speaks of the injustices from her home in Mexico. She fled Guatemala after her family was tortured and killed. In a Mayan village where families struggle to feed survivors of the years of fear, a leader shows scars inflicted because he dared to protest. Mayan leaders march to the Guatemalan parliament to demand basic human rights and self-determination. Government officials talk of moderation but President Deleon Carpio refuses to dissolve the hated patrols. Includes interviews with Guatemalan Defence Minister General Mario Enriquez and Mayan Community Organiser Miguel Sirkookie Muhere
