Abstract
During the Tet offensive of 1968, the North Vietnamese army had staged through the A Shau Valley an entire division and other VC forces for its massive attacks on Hue and Da Nang. Those attacks were a moral victory for the North, but militarily, they were a disaster. In the battle for Hue alone, the NVA lost over 5,000 men. By early 1969, it was becoming apparent to the MACV, Military Assistance Command Vietnam and 24 corps' staffs that A Shau Valley was once again an area of high NVA activity
