Summary
The palm oil industry is one of the most contentious and misunderstood industries today. From a humble indigenous tree in West Africa it has become an eyesore and environmental danger to some, while to others it is a major source of GDP and the livelihood of many developing countries. What are the facts, and what are the myths of this industry? Is palm cultivation sustainable; is it ""green"" and what are the affects to the global climate warming of our planet? In this 1 hour investigative documentary viewers will be presented with the historical background to this industry, its economic significance to South East Asia and its importance as well as its ever increasing dominance in the world today. On average, 1 in 10 products on your supermarket shelf contains palm oil; how is it labeled, how is it treated and is it harmful to your body? Secondly, what is happening to the world's most bio-diverse tropical rainforests in South East Asia and thirdly, is this product necessary? In this documentary viewers explore the importance of palm oil, its opponents as well as the people and the countries that depend on its very existence. They are presented with arguments that examine whether palm oil is in fact harmful to the environment and debate the significance of biodiesel. The film also helps to dispel some of the myths about whether palm oil causes cholesterol and if palm oil can deliver a suitable alternative energy source that suits everybody in the world today
