Summary
"This series begins with the basics of arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation and describes the components of the acid-base balance, listing their normal values and compensatory mechanism for restoring homeostasis to patient with an imbalance. Two models are used for interpretation of acute, mixed, partially compensated, and full compensated acid-base disturbances. One uses the H model, which is a visual technique in which PaCO₂, HCO₃, and pH are plotted on a double axis graph. The other uses mathematical calculations where pH can be predicted and the amount and magnitude of base or buffers in the blood can be quantified. Throughout the first two programs, questions and answers with rationales are provided to the viewer to reinforce the information presented. The final program contains clinical scenarios in which the viewer uses critical thinking to interpret the ABG results of six patients." -- Container
