- "Struggle in the Levant reveals the intricacies of the cloak and dagger politics that dominated the country and the region. While archival evidence confirms some conventional assumptions it also corrects misperceptions about the significance of the British and American as well as Egyptian and Syrian role in Lebanon in the 1950s. Also revealed is the high priority that Nasser attached to an Egyptian-American rapprochement. Attie addresses these themes within the framework of Lebanon's endemic political feature and its sensitivity to regional and international politics. This book that is based upon a close reading of the archives presents an evenhanded story of events in the 1950s in Lebanon, the effect of Arab nationalism and Anglo-American relations in the Middle East."--Jacket
