- The original purpose of this study was to define the central thematic pattern which unifies the fiction of Katherine Anne Porter and to examine its embodiment in each of her short stories and novelettes and in the novel Ship of Fools. That is still its principal purpose, though my pursuit of Miss Porter's central theme has led me ultimately into every important department of her work and even some distance into the much more problematic field of her life. - Preface
