- Extremism takes many forms: racial, political, religious, economic.This collection of extremist idealogies and writings highlights the one thread that unites the various brands of extremism, namely, that there is always an enemy. The enemy can take the form of the government, communism, the patriarchy, African Americans, gays and lesbians, men, welfare recipients, Jews, or corporation, but the presence of a clear-cut idealogical foe is an intrinsic component of extremism. Providing a panoramic perspective on American exremism from the earliest days of the republic, this book is diviced into thematic chapters on communism and anticommunism, race, social conceerns, economic matters, intentional communities, and organizations advocating radical decentralization. Familiar extremist forces here meet lesserr-known ones to paint a vivid portrait of life and thought on the political fringe. Included are writings from Jacob Coxey, the Socialist Party, the Populist Party, Father Charles E. Coughlin, Gerald L.K.
