But there is every reason to believe that man's destruction of the environment is producing a greater rate of extinction than the world has ever seen. We do not know how many species we can afford to lose. Mankind is part of nature and is ultimately dependent on natural process for survival. Indeed, our global ecosystem may one day cease to act as our support system. In this program viewers see a selection of initiatives in the worldwide effort to conserve biodiversity, including cataloging rain-forest insects, seed banking and restoration of rainforests and salt marshes
